How Japanese names work
A Japanese name has two parts: the family name (myōji) and the given name (namae). In Japanese the family name comes first, so Tanaka Hana is Hana of the Tanaka family. In English, and in most AI companion apps, she would usually be introduced as Hana Tanaka. The generator shows both orders so you can pick the one that reads naturally in your chats.
The meaning of a Japanese name depends on the kanji used to write it, not just on how it sounds. Hana written 花 means “flower”, but parents can choose other characters with the same reading and a different meaning. That's why we show one common spelling and its meaning, and leave the meaning out when a name has no single dominant spelling. Traditional names ending in -ko (子, “child”) were extremely common in the twentieth century, while modern names such as Himari, Tsumugi or Mio feel younger and lighter. Fantasy names are invented for this tool: they sound at home in an anime fantasy world, but they aren't Japanese words and carry no meaning.
Picking a name that fits her archetype
Anime fans describe characters by archetype, and a name can quietly support the personality you have in mind:
- Tsundere (prickly outside, caring inside): short, sharp names such as Rin or Akane suit her.
- Kuudere (calm and reserved): cool, nature-themed names such as Shizuka, Kasumi or Shiori.
- Genki (bright and energetic): playful sounds such as Hina, Koharu or Kurumi.
- Dandere (shy until she trusts you): soft names such as Sumire, Hotaru or Tsumugi.
- Deredere (openly affectionate): warm names such as Hana, Emi or Megumi.
- Yandere-lite (devoted, a little intense, played for fun): elegant names with a hint of mystery, such as Ayame or Tsukiko.
The archetype tag and hook on each result are suggestions, not rules. Say the name out loud with the hook: if it sounds like someone you would want to talk to every day, keep it.
Using the name in an AI companion app
Once you have a name, put it in the character's name field and repeat it in the description or persona text so the AI uses it consistently. Add the hook as part of her backstory, state clearly that she is an adult, and mention which name order she prefers. If the app has a memory or pinned-notes feature, save her full name there too. Are these real Japanese names?
Traditional and modern results come from a curated list of real Japanese given names and common surnames. Fantasy results are original invented names, labelled as such, with no kanji or meaning claimed.
Are the kanji and meanings accurate?
Each kanji shown is one common spelling, and the meaning belongs to that spelling only. The same name can be written with different kanji and mean something else. When a name has no single dominant spelling or the meaning is unclear, we leave the kanji or meaning out rather than guess.
Why is the surname shown first?
In Japanese the family name comes before the given name, so Tanaka Hana is Hana of the Tanaka family. We show the Japanese order and the Western order so you can use whichever you prefer in your AI companion app.
Can I get the same list again later?
